The Fire / The Fear (2019)

My two primary emotions are a rapturous wonder at the world, and a constant fear that has blazed in my chest since the age of 15. I burn myself up with beauty, with love; my mind is the flame, and my body the wick.

My only response such a world and such a fear is to create artwork; to balance order and chaos, to bring to life the Old Testamental visions that paint the back of my eyelids, to work with symmetry and circles and shadows and lines. My work chiefly contains symbolic imagery—I am a bird, or Christ is a ram—as I work with established forms to make sense of my perceived reality.

All of these pieces reflect a simultaneous fire and fear—holiness and sacrifice, love and naïveté, light and blindness. They are two sides of the same coin, after all, and one cannot exist without the other.
